During the U.S. Civil War, photojournalism really took off. WIth the development of the 35mm Leica camera, which was lightweight and easy to travel with, photographer Mathew Brady started taking his camera out onto the battlefield. This was the first example of photographers really going into war zones, because before, cameras were too big and bulky to be even remotely convenient to try and use.
